The Ugly Face of Racism

Today is January 5, 2017 and less than 24 hours ago we were greeted with the appalling images and video footage of 4 black young

Torture victim

A mentally challenged man tortured unmercifully.

adults torturing a white, mentally disabled man.   All the while shouting racial epithets.  Nothing could be more clear than this was a case of a bunch of racists taking out their hate on a vulnerable human being.

 Racism alive, well and growing.

I knew as soon as the violent rise of Black Lives Matter started taking place a little more than 4 years ago after the defensive shooting of Trayvon Martin that things would become worse, much worse for this nation.

We have seen “peaceful protests” turn into riots on a third world scale with burning and looting not seen since the race riots of the 60’s.  Rather than try to quell these issues in a statesman like way the Soros funded Obama administration and Loretta Lynch run justice department didn’t just fiddle while America’s cities burned they poured gasoline on them.

Racism: It’s not just for whitey anymore!

Torturers

Top row: Brittany Covington, Tesfaye Cooper; Bottom row: Jordan Hill, Tanishia Covington

The social justice world has hammered on one pseudo fact and that is that it is impossible for a white person to be the victim of racism and that ONLY white people can be racist.  Now this narrative is mind boggling since it defies even the dictionary definition of “racism”

racism

[rey-siz-uh m]
noun
1.

a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others.
2.

a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such doctrine; discrimination.
3.

hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
So I guess that racism is for everybody and here we have some real hard core proof that indeed black people can be racist too.  Wow we really have evolved – equal opportunity hate.  I am pretty sure that is what Martin Luther King was aiming for.

Sin is the problem – Jesus is the answer

What we need to see in this video and learn from this experience is this the Bible is 100% correct when it says in Genesis 6:5 “And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

We are running headlong to our own destruction and it is because of hate.  Our politicians and their soft associates have continually pushed us into that well of hate.  Look at the last election – did we talk about issues or how much each side hated the other side?

Let me be clear on something when you hate you sin.   Your violent hateful actions are not G-d driven.  You need to get saved.  Marching down the street calling for the death of cops, or Trump or Clinton or white people or black people are SIN!

I am angry but I do love you.

I have an old friend from high school – a gay, liberal, African American man.  Today he said “I’m a black liberal and even I can see this is a pure hate crime”.  In times like this I thank G-d for a reminder of how much I love this guy.  Not because we are the same but because love really becomes the answer.  Maybe if we who are “good men” would come together and say “The hate stops with me” we could really do something here, get back on track.  Yeah things won’t be perfect but maybe we can make the hate diminish when we all start saying It’s not OK.

Yes I am angry about this I wish I could have prevented it – I am angry but I will continue to do my darndest to love best I know how.

Verizon – How to lose a customer in 1 day

First let me start off by saying that I have been a Verizon Wireless customer since it was called Bell Atlantic Mobile.  That was more than 15 years ago maybe closer to 20 and I have always been very happy with the services and products until yesterday.

June 23 my contract ends and I get a new phone!

Gosh there is nothing better than “new phone day”  I had a dandy one all pre-shopped and ready to go so I went to NTX Wirless in East Stroudsburg, PA to get my new phone.  Sadly instead of asking for a DROID MAXX I asked for a DROID X.  A mistake on my part to be sure.  The nice man there told me we don’t carry those they are not popular.  This kind of shocked me since I have a DROID MAXX now and just wanted the new 3rd generation of this phone.  Again I made a mistake but you would think a SALESMAN would try to SELL me something!  You know ask me what I wanted in a phone.  Instead he just looked at me for a long uncomfortable time.  I asked if this was a corporate store he said no they were a premium reseller.

The Correct Customer Service Answer:

I am sorry we don’t have the phone you asked for in stock but we do have many other choices perhaps one of them might suit your needs.  What is most important to you in a smartphone?

Now had anyone asked me that I would have told them first off long battery life.  The phone I ACTUALLY wanted has the longest battery life on the market and the salesman would have recommended it and I would have laughed and said “Woops that is what I wanted in the first place”  We all would have laughed and I would have been on my way with a new phone.

Lesson learned:  Sell the customer what he needs when he doesn’t know what to ask for.

Off to the mall!

I called the store in Stroud Mall – they had the phone and I was off.  I asked the man why the phone I wanted was so unpopular.  He said “It is a plain box phone” and in discussion we determined I had asked for the wrong item.  Once we determined what I wanted he then informed me that my unlimited data plan would be lost if I upgraded my phone (A real incentive to NOT upgrade BTW)  He rudely told me if I didn’t like it I could call Verizon.

The correct customer service answer:

I am sorry that Verizon doesn’t have the plan you are used to but how about we take a look at your data usage and see if we can get a plan that will meet your needs.  I would hate to loose you as a customer.  Sometimes customers with unlimited plans don’t even realize how little data they actually use.

We would have found out I never go over 2 Gb of data a month and could have had some choices that indeed would have met my needs.  To just blow off a customer is a sure way to loose a sale and a long term customer.

Lesson Learned:  Offer the customer choices you may have one that they will like.

Call #1

So I went home and called “customer service” Where I was told that I could get a 2 Gb plan and unlimited talk and text (I don’t do much of either) I told the young lady Iorange-customer-service-300x300 was going to shop around.  You would think she would pull out the big guns then to try and keep me on the phone and save the sale.  Not so.  So I went out shopping and found other plans but they seemed all about in the same line.

The Correct Customer Service Answer:

Wait sir before you hang up let me research other options we might have for you. -OR- Let me put you through to customer loyalty / retention they may be able to find other options.

Had she done this we would have found out about the soon to be Verizon MAXX plan and I would have bought on the spot

I called back!

Enter Mario!  The single worst CSR I have ever done business with.  He might have done well in the Spanish queue but was nearly impossible to understand to me.  He was quick and abrupt with me obviously wanting me off the phone.  He did not know the product and made a technical error in it’s description to me.  Worse yet he kept putting me on hold for more than half an hour.  “Sorry I have to go Mario just cancel everything I said.”  Mario tells me the phone has been ordered!  I was like umm excuse me but I never agreed to it nor have you read me a TOS nor gotten an acknowledgement that I am even me.  Plus you can’t seem to find this plan that the last girl said she would put me in.  I hung up.

Management Tip:

Mario should not be working on an English speaking queue to begin with.  Sorry but I was born and raised here.  I love Spanish people but not on the phone.  I can’t understand them.  When I spend American dollars I want a CSR that speaks English I can understand.  That being said he also needs to be re-trained there was so much wrong with this call I don’t even know where to begin.

I called back – Hi Tammy!

Well I finally get a CSR who is on the ball enough to get me both the phone and a plan with 6 Gb of data which will be enough for me and at the same price.  YAY – trouble is I got to send her an email when I get the phone and she is going to call me?  This all seems rather convoluted and I have a bad feeling about it.  BUT OK lets do it!

Customer Service Tip:  Close the darn sale right then and their.  Regardless of anything else I could have slipped away and as it turns out I should have.  After all the run around why do we need to mess around with e-mails and phone calls?  As it turns out the ball would be dropped again.

I get an E-mail

Whoo hoo!  I get an e-mail and find out that I have been put into a plan I really don’t want.  I figure Tammy will fix this after we talk later in the week.  I check the status on the order on the web – says there I have to talk to security?  About what?  And could we not have put this in the email?

Then I ask to speak to someone in Customer Retention.  Well yes sir Mr Cook I will transfer you and here is the number in case you get disconnected.  Well guess what?  The number you gave and transferred me to was a disconnected number.

Customer Service Tip:  When you have a very frustrated customer you make darn good and sure they get to speak to some one when they want to complain.  To transfer to a dead number just makes matters worse much much worse.

Sadly the phone service is out

Yupp No service at all for anyone in my area.  No place to call even if you have a home phone.  I finally get a hold of Security and they ask a bunch of questions.  They tell me it is standard (so much for Mario and his phone that was being sent or for Tammy)  I ask to speak to customer retention – they give me a disconnected number at Verizon and transfer me to it.  NICE!  I am looking for some one to tell how lousy my experience has been and they send me to the dead letter office.  Way to go Verizon!

Tech Tip:  How about having a number to report outages to?  Or a website that is monitored by Verizon staff?  How about tech support 24/7?  There are so many places we could have done better here and yet we chose not to do any of them!

The Twitter Caper

Apparently Verizon has a Twitter account – mind you they don’t answer it.  I can clearly see a pattern here.  You send us money and we throw you to the ground.  No one is listening and no one cares.  So tell me does anyone have the number for AT&T?

Customer Service Tip:  Darnit really Twitter?  I thought this was the phone company.  The highly trained people on the other side of twitter were really good at saying they were sorry but not very good at actually doing anything about it.

The Phone Arrives!

Like a good soldier I e-mail Tammy.  You remember Tammy right?  The one who was going to fix it all up and make it better?  I get an email back at the beginning of her shift telling me “Our systems are down”.  Now I figure how long can this go on for really I mean they can’t process orders with the systems down right?

I made 2 more customer contact points with Tammy and seems like “the systems were down” until after her shift ended.  Right now I have an activated phone with who knows what kind of plan on it.  I sure don’t!  Honestly a system being down for an entire day in a company the size of Verizon should be national news.  One can only imagine the millions of dollars that they must be loosing.

Tech Tip:  If your IT department is so bad that they can’t “get the system back up” in an hour or two FIRE THE IT MANAGEMENT AND GET PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT THE HECK THEY ARE DOING!

On to Day #5 of what should have taken less than 30 minutes on Monday

No matter what the outcome of this – I will be doing the following

1 I will forward a copy of this Blog to the highest level of management in Verizon.  I am not sure they know how bad the customer service is especially since I have yet to get a single customer satisfaction survey.

2 I will NOT be using Verizon when my second line goes off contract and will not renew with this one either.

3 I will ensure that everyone I know in person and on Social Media hears about this.  I am not the biggest fish in the sea but you know with thousands of followers between my radio show, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube I am sure I can get a few people to listen.

Hey Verizon can you hear me now?

Assaulted at Walmart

Let me start out by saying I am a huge adherent to what is known as “Situational Awareness”  To make things fairly short and because there are better articles out there on the subject let me go over the phases of situational awareness.

WHITE – You are completely unaware of your surroundings completely absorbed in your phone or listening to music with your earphones or just plain day dreaming.

YELLOW – You are on alert looking for things out of place or possible threats.  Your head is on a swivel and ears are listening.

ORANGE – A threat or possible threat has been identified and you have begun to take an action that will put you into a better position to deal with that threat.  That might mean crossing the street or running or beginning the reach for your concealed weapon.

RED – Game on you are in the fight you have been attacked and now must meet the threat head on or be beaten or killed.

It has been said that condition orange is a luxury afforded only to those who live their lives in condition yellow.  People who live in condition white (which is far too many of us) typically go from white to red and all too often do not prevail in an encounter.

knockout-gameWe have all heard about the “knock out game” where a young thug selected out of a group of friends walks up and sucker punches an innocent person.  Many times doing tremendous physical harm to that person.  Without exception my studies show that all of the victims were in condition white when they were hit.  Distracted – head down – not aware of anything going on around them.  Worse yet being completely non confrontational.  How very sad that we have come to this point in society but the fact remains here we are!

So about my trip to Walmart on Monday well actually Tuesday.  I get off work very late so I shop very late.  I was in our local Walmart at about 1 AM Tuesday and as I was leaving I was quickly approached by a wild eyed man with his right hand in an inside (chest high) jacket pocket.  As he approached me he said “Hey Mister can I ask you something?”

Because I live in condition yellow I had the luxury of what happened next. I took one very large step back increasing my distance from him, put my left hand out all the way, swept back my outer garment and got a combat grip on my concealed handgun and forcefully and loudly said “BACK OFF DO NOT GET ANY CLOSER”  He took one look at what his mark was and decided I was much too hard of a target and quickly turned tail and scurried back to what ever shadows he was lurking in earlier all the while saying I was lucky he didn’t kill me.

Let’s break it down:

Condition Yellow – Knew the area and time it was dark and the parking lot is noted for high crime.  Saw and identified a man I did not know approaching me faster than normal.  Took note that he might have had a weapon as his right hand was inside his upper jacket.  Heard his comment and knew that it was a ruse to allow him inside of my personal space.knockout-game-113318500640

Condition Orange – Created space between me and possible threat.  Prepared to fight with the best weapon at my disposal. (In this case my trusty Glock 19 carried at 4 o’clock on my belt) Created a barrier with my left arm.

Condition Red – Startled him by yelling and gave powerful verbal command to not get any closer.  Now you may say that is not the most exciting fight you ever heard of.  GOOD!  As concealed weapons holders our goal is to NEUTRALIZE THE THREAT!  His running off like a scared rabbit ended the threat.  No one took a beating or got shot.  That is the very best kind of engagement.

I learned much about this about 35 years ago – another dark night but I was in condition white.  When the man who at that time asked me for a cigarette and by the time I answered I had a knife at my throat and he had 2 friends along side him.  That cost me my wallet, a movie camera and quite a bit of blood.  I think that I really enjoyed the luxury of condition orange.

So tell me what condition are you in?  Do you plan on making any changes?

Keep your powder dry and stay in condition yellow!

Minimum effort = Minimum results

Today I was involved in a heated debate with someone regarding raising the minimum wage to $15.00 an hour.  The person who wanted this said “The big corporations are greedy they could pay people that and barely touch their profit”  I am simply shocked that here in the United States we are so easily slipping into what amounts to communism.

The purpose of your job is NOT so that you can derive income.  The purpose of your job is to make money for who ever you are working for.  Since we have rich-man-10862383rushed headlong into a society filled with entitlement mentality we forget this.  The reason you are employed is because the employer had a need so that the people at the top and the investors who took risks can make a profit.  That in a nutshell is how capitalism works.  Remember poor people do not create jobs wealthy people do.

When I was a freshman in college my first professor David Freund on the very first day said something that would stick with me the rest of my life: “No one here is going to ‘give’ you an education you are going to have to steal it”  The professor taught more in that one sentence than I would learn the rest of the year.  That is that if you want something you are going to have to work for it and work HARD!

So you want to earn $15 an hour or $20 or $50?  Let me give you the recipe for success.

  1. Work all day and study all night or vice versa.  Education is the key to success.  Now I know that this means you will have to do with out surfing Facebook and watching TV and probably any kind of social life but that is how it is done.  Go out and get those skills however you have to. work hard work Be it college or working for free as an apprentice for a skilled laborer.  Yes I said it offer to work for free so that you can get the job skills you need.  That is how things were done in days gone by.
  2. Work harder at your current job than anyone else in the place.  Come in early and stay late.  Remember your purpose there is to make the owner money so make him LOTS of money.  In all things be excellent. If you mope around that minimum wage job like an unmotivated sot you will stay right where you are.
  3. Take advantage of every opportunity.  Extra work YOU BET!  If you don’t take those opportunities then don’t be surprised when fewer come your way.
  4. Be a risk taker.  The reason the company that you work for is there is because someplace along the line someone took a risk.  They started a company in a garage, they put in 20 hour days, they invested money in something and were willing to loose it.  If you look at the most successful people in America many of them have gone bankrupt more than once.  But they kept taking risks and kept working hard till it paid off.
  5. If you are young especially put off marriage and having kids as well as hobbies and leisure activities.  I know this one sounds harsh but remember you wanted to be a success right?  That means putting off the fun stuff and rolling up your sleeves now.

At the end of the day what I am telling you is to quit whining and get working.  I Worker.Power_house_mechanic_croppedstarted my life out washing dishes in a restaurant and when I decided I just could not do that any longer I made up my mind to be a cook.  It meant doing stuff that was “not my job” It meant showing the boss that I had the determination to be more than what I was.  Eventually I became a cook (and I got a .10 cent raise too!) and then a chef and then an executive chef and then an assistant manager and later a manager.  Each step I worked myself to death to get to the next rung on the ladder.  Today I work on computers and preach in a church and no one has “given me an education”  If I can do it so can you.

America is STILL the land of opportunity but sadly too many want to make it into the land of whining and complaining and gimme gimme GIMME!  Well let me leave you with one last thought from the bible:

2Th 3:10  For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.

Remember Minimum wage = Minimum effort = Minimum results

Just what would Jesus do?

Last Night I once again went on a bit of a rant on Facebook about something that I thought was very much a social injustice  this time aimed directly at me!  Right now it doesn’t matter just exactly what the issue was just suffice to say that it was institutionalized thuggery and incompetence at it’s finest.  This always presses my buttons and I tend to get more than just a bit hot under the collar about these things and I tend to be pretty vocal about it.

In Come the Christians – Predictably my anger is met with a quick chorus of “How dare you talk like that!” and “What kind of “pastor” are you?”  and my very favorite of them all “What would Jesus do?”  Well lets take a look at just what Jesus would do shall we?

jesus-cleansing-temple

Joh 2:13 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up

 to Jerusalem.
Joh 2:14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business.
Joh 2:15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables.
Joh 2:16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!”

Lets see what was going on here!

This was much more than just a “religious” issue!  This had to do with the law and institutionalized thievery.  The Jewish people though under the yoke of Roman oppression operated on a theocratic government for the most part and this based on the Torah.  The law REQUIRED all Jews to show up in Jerusalem three times a year, Passover being one of them.  The law also required them to provide an animal sacrifice.  Most people who traveled a long distance did not bring an animal to sacrifice and would buy one that was acceptable at the temple when they got there.

This is where it gets good!  So we have vendors of animals that are considered OK by the government (aka the Pharisees) which they will of course sell you at an inflated price. Anyone who has ever gone to a stadium and paid $7 for a hot dog and $12 for a beer knows how that goes!  But wait there is more too it!  The vendors of animals would ONLY accept the local coin (temple currency) so they would send you over to the money changers who would take the money from your local area and “exchange” it to money the vendors would accept and at NONE too favorable an exchange rate.

People were literally trapped in a system they could not escape and of course everyone was “just doing their job”  This is what so INFURIATED Jesus!  Angry to the point of creating a weapon and using it!

Lets talk about that whip!  This was not just some little bunch of twine he was whirling about oh no!  The Greek word is phragellion.

roman-scourge-1

φραγέλλιον
phragellion
frag-el’-le-on
Neuter of a derivative from the base of G5417; a whip, that is, Roman lash as a public punishment: – scourge.

You might know this better as a “cat-o-nine-tails” a viscous weapon to be sure  designed to peel the skin right off of a mans flesh.  So here we have the prince of peace – Jesus Christ beating the daylights out of people turning over tables and generally standing up for what is right!  Sounds pretty demonstrative to me even GASP violent!

The concept of a meek and mild pastor is actually a pretty new one.  If you are reading this in the United States you can thank in part a pastor by the name of John Peter Muhlenburg a Lutheran pastor who on January 21, 1776 in the middle of a sermon declared “Now was the time for war” and went straight away from the pulpit to the battlefield and took as many men as would come with him!  Thus was born the black robe regiment who was considered so dangerous by the British that these preachers were to be a primary target when ever encountered.  So much for shy and meek preachers!

GSTS69420 III-9

Perhaps the most famous of Patriot Pastors was the Rev. John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg. In January of 1776 after completing a message from the text, Ecclesiastes 3:1,“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven,” Pastor Muhlenberg stepped down from his pulpit and said, “In the language of the Holy Writ, there is a time for all things. There is a time to preach and a time to fight. And now is the time to fight.” He then removed his clerical robe to reveal the uniform of a Colonial Army officer. That afternoon, he rode off leading 300 men from his congregation to join General George Washington as the Eighth Virginia Cavalry. Pastor Muhlenberg rose to the rank of Major General before the war ended. (1)

I am of this sort – No I will not be meek and mild as some would have me painted.  I will not fill the stereotype roll and I hope you won’t either.  If we are going to win a war against oppression and tyranny we need men and wom

jesus-cleanses-the-temple

en who will stand up!  People who will speak their minds!  Demand excellence and accountability in all walks of life and in all dealings. And if you ask me “what wou

ld Jesus do?”  I am going to remind you that going into a fit of rage – turning over tables and beating the daylights out of people with a whip is not out of the question!
