The Ugly Face of Racism

Today is January 5, 2017 and less than 24 hours ago we were greeted with the appalling images and video footage of 4 black young

Torture victim

A mentally challenged man tortured unmercifully.

adults torturing a white, mentally disabled man.   All the while shouting racial epithets.  Nothing could be more clear than this was a case of a bunch of racists taking out their hate on a vulnerable human being.

 Racism alive, well and growing.

I knew as soon as the violent rise of Black Lives Matter started taking place a little more than 4 years ago after the defensive shooting of Trayvon Martin that things would become worse, much worse for this nation.

We have seen “peaceful protests” turn into riots on a third world scale with burning and looting not seen since the race riots of the 60’s.  Rather than try to quell these issues in a statesman like way the Soros funded Obama administration and Loretta Lynch run justice department didn’t just fiddle while America’s cities burned they poured gasoline on them.

Racism: It’s not just for whitey anymore!

Torturers

Top row: Brittany Covington, Tesfaye Cooper; Bottom row: Jordan Hill, Tanishia Covington

The social justice world has hammered on one pseudo fact and that is that it is impossible for a white person to be the victim of racism and that ONLY white people can be racist.  Now this narrative is mind boggling since it defies even the dictionary definition of “racism”

racism

[rey-siz-uh m]
noun
1.

a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others.
2.

a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such doctrine; discrimination.
3.

hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
So I guess that racism is for everybody and here we have some real hard core proof that indeed black people can be racist too.  Wow we really have evolved – equal opportunity hate.  I am pretty sure that is what Martin Luther King was aiming for.

Sin is the problem – Jesus is the answer

What we need to see in this video and learn from this experience is this the Bible is 100% correct when it says in Genesis 6:5 “And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

We are running headlong to our own destruction and it is because of hate.  Our politicians and their soft associates have continually pushed us into that well of hate.  Look at the last election – did we talk about issues or how much each side hated the other side?

Let me be clear on something when you hate you sin.   Your violent hateful actions are not G-d driven.  You need to get saved.  Marching down the street calling for the death of cops, or Trump or Clinton or white people or black people are SIN!

I am angry but I do love you.

I have an old friend from high school – a gay, liberal, African American man.  Today he said “I’m a black liberal and even I can see this is a pure hate crime”.  In times like this I thank G-d for a reminder of how much I love this guy.  Not because we are the same but because love really becomes the answer.  Maybe if we who are “good men” would come together and say “The hate stops with me” we could really do something here, get back on track.  Yeah things won’t be perfect but maybe we can make the hate diminish when we all start saying It’s not OK.

Yes I am angry about this I wish I could have prevented it – I am angry but I will continue to do my darndest to love best I know how.

New Year: A New Resolution of Compassion

With the New Year finally upon us, the big 2K17, now is the time when most people will be considering new resolutions. Always looking for a way to improve. Whether they be losing weight, getting back in touch with someone, improving yourself through little tests and trials.

But, let’s face it, most of the resolutions people make, will not be accomplished. It is sad to say, but certainly doesn’t negate the facts.

So I offer a brand new type of resolution. One that has nothing to do with losing weight, spending less/saving more, getting organized, or enjoying life to the fullest. Which were the top four of 2015.

Everything in our society has become so superficial. Since cellphones became so important, that they have consumed most of the population; it is hard to think of anything to improve beyond ourselves.

The millennials make this even more obvious. Documenting every single second of their lives, for likes, comments, and shares. But what are they really gaining from this? Honestly, lower self-esteem, lower confidence, and lower social skills. And all three of these impact more parts of their lives than they care to realize or acknowledge.

So this year, why don’t we take a new path? Why not try something brand new, a resolution or set of goals that are completely different than what we have been making every single year for the past XX amount of years.

A New, New Resolution

You may be wondering, what the heck is this crazy lady talking about? The whole point of a resolution is to improve OURSELVES, to be better at something that WE deem worthy of our time.

But maybe it doesn’t and shouldn’t be. With how selfish society has become with the mask of acceptance and tolerance, it should become more about what we can do that impacts more than just ourselves.

The type of New Year’s Resolution the world needs these days is for people to be more kind in all of their ways.

  • Find your local homeless shelter, and donate some canned food. For a hefty bag of food it shouldn’t cost more than $10-20 bucks. And that food will go a long way.
  • Donate a bag of food to the county human society. I, personally, have always felt that there is nothing that reflects better on a person than how they help those that cannot help themselves. Because at this point, you are doing something with no interest in receiving anything in return, and that is TRUE kindness.
  • Volunteer at a soup kitchen for a few hours.
  • Donate children’s books to a local orphanage.
  • Volunteer at the Children’s hospital.
  • Pay it forward. Do a kindness every single day, even if it is small. Write it down, and keep it in a jar, so next year you can read about all of the little things you did for people over the past year. And realize how much that little thing could impact more than just yourself.
  • Witness to people, pray over strangers, and let them know how Christ can help them with their daily struggles, and major hardships. This is the best gift anyone can give, it takes only a little bit of time, but it can drastically change a person’s life, and I can personally attest to that.
  • Be a little nicer, a little more patient, a little more understanding, but most of all, be a little more kind.

Those are just a few, but you get the point.

Everyone these days has become so greedy and cruel that when we do something for another person our first thought is: ‘Well, if I do that for them, what will I get in return?’

No one does anything these days without a clear purpose, goal, or return on their ‘investment of time’. And if you ask me, that is just sad.

We should be kind to each other, just because it’s the right thing to do. Being kind isn’t a show of weakness or a lesser internal strength. Quite the opposite, showing kindness, without expecting anything in return is the ultimate show of character and compassion. Something this world needs.

Helping a person (or animal) that is worse off should make you feel stronger, knowing that you were able to help a person with a couple dollars, or a little bit of food. It should make you feel like a better person knowing that you helping someone that 1000’s of other people simply walked by without even glancing their way.

It is a true show of character, doing something for someone, knowing they can never ‘return the favor’ because at that point, you know that you are doing it for simply their sake, not yours.

The world needs a little more compassion, and a lot more kindness.

My Weight Loss Journey – Part 1

I ate myself fat!

There is simply no way around this solid kernel of truth I ate myself fat.  I didn’t “get fat” I personally shoveled in all that food into my mouth and ate myself fat.

Big Fat Preacher

Pastor George at an enormous 294 lbs

The fact of the matter is that I had once again fallen prey to the all too easy and all too American sin of gluttony.  I made excuses and let other people make them for me.  I convinced myself that if I ate kind of healthy I could indulge other times.  Because I went to the gym a few nights a week and lifted weights it was a lot of muscle mass.  Yes I was a big strong fat man.   It was my own fork that led me to balloon up to 294 lbs.

6′ 2″ – 294 lbs with a body fat that was about 44%   YIKES!  I was huge!  I think the real wakeup call came for me in two parts, first my wife, my sister and myself went to a water park in Branson MO.  I looked at one of the rides I wanted to go on with my sister and it said there was a 300 lb limit.  I knew I had to be close to or over that.  How sad to not be allowed to go on a ride because you ate yourself fat I thought.  Later that week I went to play miniature golf with my wife.  I could not get down on one knee pick up a golf ball and stand up again without help.  I was just too heavy.  I noticed I was having trouble climbing stairs and I knew – I was FAT!

Is it sin?

Lets take a look at the bible: Exo 20:13  Thou shalt not murder.  Well there you have it.  Pretty obvious that I was murdering me one bite at a time.  Every burger, every pizza and all that ice cream and fried chicken.  We were given just one body by our creator and I am pretty sure that killing it with food is not what He intended for us.

As well putting any idol in front of G-d is surely sin.  Food had become for me an idol and that simply cannot be.  G-d will not share his temple with anything else.  Heck I had gone right past temple and had built a full fledged cathedral and I am not sure there was room for Messiah in there what with all that fried okra that I had stored up in there.

The road back

60 Pounds less

How I look after loosing nearly 60 lbs

As I write this it has been about 5 months since I was at my absolute heaviest.  I have lost just about 60 lbs and weighed in today as I write this at 234.7 lbs.  My body fat percentage as measured is 23.6% which is about average for a man my age (did I mention that I am 58 years old?)  I want to say it has been easy but that would be a lie.  It has been a struggle.  It has tested my discipline and faith quite a bit.

I am back to being in the gym 5 nights a week and doing 90 minutes or more of cardio and strength training just about 7 days a week.  I can run again and yeah I can pick up a golf ball and get up again.

I have learned a few things along the way and I want to share them.  I want to be healthy and not feed the medical establishment one dollar more than I have to.  I want that for you too.  So before we begin let me remind you of one simple fact.  If you have faith even as small as a mustard seed you can speak to that mountain and tell it to be removed into the sea and it shall go.  Now it was Jesus who promised that in Luke 17:6 and if a mountain can be moved by faith whats a few lbs of fat?

LET’S GO!

Thighmaster

The infamous Thigh Master!

OK for the first part of this let me tell you that gimmicks don’t work.  There is no pill – no machine – no electronic device that is going to get that fat off of you.  You ate it now you got to un-eat it.  Put away that Thigh master you won’t need it here

Here is what you need for the next two weeks – sneakers and a watch or anything that will tell time.  (Like your cell phone)  I guess this is where I give you the first advice before you start doing anything make sure you go see a doctor and tell him that you are fat and that you want to loose weight.  Have him or her make sure you are not going to die in the next few hours.

The Diet

OK got that done?  GREAT! First the diet.  You know all those diet books, recipes and diet foods you have been gathering around you for years?  Get rid of them.  They are complicated and they don’t work.  Here is your diet:

  • Nothing White
  • No Refined Sugar
  • Reduce Fat Wherever Possible

First nothing white no white bread, no white rice, no white flour if it is white it is not food for you any more.  Here is the sound science behind this.  To make foods white they bleach out all of the nutrients.  White bread is all calories and no nutrition.  This makes you get hungry right away.  That is why when you eat at McDonalds an hour later you are hungry again, you simply ate but you did not feed your body.

Second no refined sugar.  This is tricky but basically no cookies, candy, ice cream, pie and for sure NO SODA.  Sugar is as addictive as heroin maybe even more so.  In fact refined sugar hits the same pleasure receptors in your brain as heroin does.  That is why when you are depressed you sit on your couch eating a tub of ice cream.  Stop it!  You are better than that and you can do it!

Last reduce fat wherever you can.  Now I know I am going to get e-mails telling me YOU HAVE TO HAVE FAT TO LIVE!  Yeah I get it and trust me no matter how much fat you cut out of your diet you will still be getting plenty.  Fat combined with sugar is the number one additive in most fast food.  It gives you a feeling of well being and guess what your body knows that the hard times might come so it packs away all that fat for later when it will need it.  Only later never comes.  Now it is later for your body – when you take away all that extra fat it will burn some off of your massive butt.

The exercise plan

Remember those sneakers I told you to bring – put them on.  Now go to your front door.  Look at your watch.  Now go for a walk I want you to walk for 7 1/2 minutes.  Don’t run or jog just walk.  You can walk fast if you like but keep walking.  Go in a straight line.  Walk for 7 1/2 minutes.  Did you do that?  Good now go home.  Do this twice a day.  No excuses, yes I know it is cold out and that it is raining or snowing or what have you – tough!

No the walking you do at work doesn’t count.  No if you go to the gym and lift weights it doesn’t count.  Only walking counts that is your new complicated exercise regimen.

If you do these two things in 2 weeks you are going to loose about 5 – 6 lbs.  Stay tuned right here for part 2 and beyond – You got this!  G-d loves you and you can do all things through him!

Just what would Jesus do?

Last Night I once again went on a bit of a rant on Facebook about something that I thought was very much a social injustice  this time aimed directly at me!  Right now it doesn’t matter just exactly what the issue was just suffice to say that it was institutionalized thuggery and incompetence at it’s finest.  This always presses my buttons and I tend to get more than just a bit hot under the collar about these things and I tend to be pretty vocal about it.

In Come the Christians – Predictably my anger is met with a quick chorus of “How dare you talk like that!” and “What kind of “pastor” are you?”  and my very favorite of them all “What would Jesus do?”  Well lets take a look at just what Jesus would do shall we?

jesus-cleansing-temple

Joh 2:13 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up

 to Jerusalem.
Joh 2:14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business.
Joh 2:15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables.
Joh 2:16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!”

Lets see what was going on here!

This was much more than just a “religious” issue!  This had to do with the law and institutionalized thievery.  The Jewish people though under the yoke of Roman oppression operated on a theocratic government for the most part and this based on the Torah.  The law REQUIRED all Jews to show up in Jerusalem three times a year, Passover being one of them.  The law also required them to provide an animal sacrifice.  Most people who traveled a long distance did not bring an animal to sacrifice and would buy one that was acceptable at the temple when they got there.

This is where it gets good!  So we have vendors of animals that are considered OK by the government (aka the Pharisees) which they will of course sell you at an inflated price. Anyone who has ever gone to a stadium and paid $7 for a hot dog and $12 for a beer knows how that goes!  But wait there is more too it!  The vendors of animals would ONLY accept the local coin (temple currency) so they would send you over to the money changers who would take the money from your local area and “exchange” it to money the vendors would accept and at NONE too favorable an exchange rate.

People were literally trapped in a system they could not escape and of course everyone was “just doing their job”  This is what so INFURIATED Jesus!  Angry to the point of creating a weapon and using it!

Lets talk about that whip!  This was not just some little bunch of twine he was whirling about oh no!  The Greek word is phragellion.

roman-scourge-1

φραγέλλιον
phragellion
frag-el’-le-on
Neuter of a derivative from the base of G5417; a whip, that is, Roman lash as a public punishment: – scourge.

You might know this better as a “cat-o-nine-tails” a viscous weapon to be sure  designed to peel the skin right off of a mans flesh.  So here we have the prince of peace – Jesus Christ beating the daylights out of people turning over tables and generally standing up for what is right!  Sounds pretty demonstrative to me even GASP violent!

The concept of a meek and mild pastor is actually a pretty new one.  If you are reading this in the United States you can thank in part a pastor by the name of John Peter Muhlenburg a Lutheran pastor who on January 21, 1776 in the middle of a sermon declared “Now was the time for war” and went straight away from the pulpit to the battlefield and took as many men as would come with him!  Thus was born the black robe regiment who was considered so dangerous by the British that these preachers were to be a primary target when ever encountered.  So much for shy and meek preachers!

GSTS69420 III-9

Perhaps the most famous of Patriot Pastors was the Rev. John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg. In January of 1776 after completing a message from the text, Ecclesiastes 3:1,“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven,” Pastor Muhlenberg stepped down from his pulpit and said, “In the language of the Holy Writ, there is a time for all things. There is a time to preach and a time to fight. And now is the time to fight.” He then removed his clerical robe to reveal the uniform of a Colonial Army officer. That afternoon, he rode off leading 300 men from his congregation to join General George Washington as the Eighth Virginia Cavalry. Pastor Muhlenberg rose to the rank of Major General before the war ended. (1)

I am of this sort – No I will not be meek and mild as some would have me painted.  I will not fill the stereotype roll and I hope you won’t either.  If we are going to win a war against oppression and tyranny we need men and wom

jesus-cleanses-the-temple

en who will stand up!  People who will speak their minds!  Demand excellence and accountability in all walks of life and in all dealings. And if you ask me “what wou

ld Jesus do?”  I am going to remind you that going into a fit of rage – turning over tables and beating the daylights out of people with a whip is not out of the question!
